Learn How to DJ

Are you thinking about learning how to DJ?

Have you already started DJing and feel stuck?

Book this private DJ session that replaces guesswork with clarity so you understand what you are doing, why you are doing it and how to move forward with confidence!

This is a perfect last-minute Christmas gift idea for yourself or for a loved one.

Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada) – April 2018

Who are these sessions for?

I offer a 90-minute private online or in-person session for individuals or small groups of children, teenagers and adults who are interested in DJing, are getting started or have already started and are struggling to progress, whether as a passion or a professional pursuit.

What is the focus of the session?

These sessions are designed to give you clarity, structure and direction rather than overwhelm you with theory or leave you guessing what matters.

I focus on how DJing actually works in practice: preparation, track selection, phrasing, transitions, timing, workflow and how to develop consistency and confidence behind the decks.

Do I need any prior experience?

This is suitable for complete beginners, people who feel stuck after starting and those who want a more solid foundation before moving further. No prior experience is required.

The aim is understanding, not mastery. There is no performance pressure and no expectation to already know anything.

Is this a course or a fixed curriculum?

This is not a generic course or a fixed curriculum. I adapt the 90-minute session to where you are now, what you are trying to do and what is currently holding you back. This is not designed for people looking for quick tricks, shortcuts or guaranteed outcomes.

Why are the sessions one-to-one?

London, England (United Kingdom) – February 2024

This is why I prefer to offer these lessons on a one-to-one basis. Everyone is different, people tend to feel more comfortable without an audience of other learners and it allows us to work from the comfort of your home, at a time that suits you and most importantly on your own DJ equipment.

Why does equipment matter so much?

Montréal, Québec (Canada) – September 2014

When I started DJing in 1994, setups were almost universal. Two Technics SL-1200s and a mixer.

Even though DJ mixers varied, they were largely self-explanatory.

Thirty years later, DJ kits are extremely diverse: vinyl-only, CDJs, standalone controllers, laptop-based systems, digital vinyl systems and even just a solo laptop or one with with MIDI controllers.

Even after DJing for this long, I still sometimes find myself in front of a setup that takes me quite a hot minute to fully feel comfortable on that’s how much variety there is out there!

That is why one-to-one private sessions are, in my experience, the most effective way to learn. They remove friction, remove confusion and allow you to practise on your own equipment and safe space once I have shown you how things work.

How do I book?

You register for a 90-minute session. The fee is US $150 (local sales taxes may apply).

After you register, you will receive an email from me and we will schedule a Zoom session at a time that suits you, as long as it is before 15 April 2026.

I will also send you a reminder the day before and let you know what you need to have ready.

Can other people be present?

London, England (United Kingdom) – January 2020

Although the session is for singe individuals, other people can be present.

However, I will only interact with the person who registered for the session and I will ask other participants not to interject unless invited. If others want to actively participate, this becomes a group session and a participatory fee applies.

What can we work on?

We can work on digital, vinyl or a combination, depending on your kit and goals or I can give you valuable insight into what you need to get started DJing for fun or as an eventual career.

Where do in-person sessions take place?

Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada) – October 2025

Sessions are available online or in person in Metro Vancouver (Canada), where I live, subject to availability and where you are located. In-person sessions in Metro Vancouver or in your city, when touring out of town, carry a surcharge.

What happens in the first session?

This initial 90-minute session is an introduction. We will talk about your current situation, your goals and the most sensible way forward. You can ask as many questions as you need. The aim is that you leave with more clarity than you had when you arrived.

What if I want to continue?

If you would like ongoing lessons after that, we can arrange a series at a lower rate depending on the number of sessions or you can simply book sessions occasionally as questions or challenges come up.

My aim is not to keep you dependent on lessons but to give you enough clarity and confidence to move forward on your own. There is a real sense of satisfaction in figuring things out for yourself if that is how you prefer to work and that is how I approach it too.

What if the student is a minor?

If you are a parent of a minor, I ask that you be present on the call or in the same space at all times.

Who is JaBig?

Montréal, Québec (Canada) – July 2026

JaBig is an international DJ and adventurer from Montréal, Canada who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia when not on the road on tour or on a cycling expedition.

(I will now revert to the first person because it is weird and pretty pompous to write about oneself in the third!😅)

I started DJing in my mid-teens in 1994 at house parties and school events and as I honed my skills, I also taught my friends how to mix so that I could socialise and slow dance rather than be stuck behind the decks.

When I turned 18, I started spinning seriously at clubs and university events which lit a fire in me and led me to stop my Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing major) and pursue DJing on a full time basis, while still teaching friends and strangers as word got around that I was willing to share knowledge in what was then a fairly gatekept field and my students became proficient pretty fast.

Thirty years later, I am still DJing professionally in various places around the globe and teaching the next generation of DJs who are discovering the artform and want to pursue it as a passion or as a profession, as well as current DJs and record collectors who want to learn how to mix vinyl as it makes quite a comeback.
