Learn How to Mix Vinyl

I offer a 90-minute private online or in-person session for individuals or small groups of children, teenagers and adults who want to learn how to mix vinyl, whether they are new DJs, established digital DJs moving into analogue or simply record collectors and audiophiles who want to use their collection properly.
Vinyl DJing is making a comeback. On one side, people want to touch and own their music again in an era dominated by streaming and AI. On the other, many music lovers who could not afford records in their youth now have the means and the time to build a collection.

This has created two main groups. DJs who started after the decline of vinyl and now want to learn the analogue way and collectors who want to be able to play their records properly for themselves or for guests at home.
Vinyl mixing is tactile and physical. It behaves differently from controllers, laptops and even CDJs. That is why a private one-to-one session with me is often the fastest way to understand what is actually happening under your hands and why things feel harder or less predictable than in the digital world.
If you have been trying to learn from scattered tutorials or long online conversations and feel like you are going in circles, this session is designed to replace that confusion with clarity.
What we work on

What we cover depends on where you are and what you want to achieve. Typical areas include:
- turntable mechanics and signal flow so you understand what is actually happening
- stylus placement, cueing and record handling
- pitch control, tempo matching and phase alignment
- managing drift, correcting it cleanly and knowing when to let it run
- phrasing, bar structure and musical timing
- transition types and when to use them
- reading records, energy management and set flow
- practising efficiently on vinyl without wasting time or damaging records

We can also cover practical topics such as:
- choosing turntables, mixers, cartridges and slipmats
- setting up and calibrating your system properly
- record care, storage and cleaning
- sourcing good vinyl and avoiding poor pressings
- organising and managing a growing collection
If you are already DJing professionally, we can skip fundamentals and focus entirely on refining your analogue technique, tightening transitions and improving consistency.
This is a private session, so we work on what matters to you rather than following a fixed curriculum.
About me, DJ JaBig

I started DJing in 1994 at house parties and school events during my formative years in Nairobi, Kenya and have been DJing and teaching ever since.
This photo was taken in 1999 at a house party in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I gave a demonstration for the attendees after an impromptu DJ set.
Over the past three decades, I have DJed internationally and along the way I have helped hundreds of beginners and advanced DJs hone their skills and craft their unique style, and some have gone on to achieve far greater success than I ever sought for my own career, which is something I am extremely proud of.

My personal philosophy, and the one I instil in my students, is to stick with essential principles and then practise until close to perfection in technique, programming and performance, to the point where sceptics sometimes wonder whether my sets or those of my students are computer generated.

How it works
You book a 90-minute session.
After booking, I will email you and we will agree on a time for the session, as long as it is before 15 April 2026.
Online sessions take place on Zoom.
In-person sessions are available in Metro Vancouver and carry a surcharge. If we meet in person, it is preferable to work on your own setup so what you learn transfers directly into your day-to-day practice.
Short, regular practice on your own equipment is far more effective than occasional long sessions on unfamiliar gear.
What’s next?
